Furthering your knowledge in paediatric osteopathy

The University College of Osteopathy (UCO) is pleased announce two new stand-alone paediatric osteopathy CPD courses to our extensive annual CPD programme. The Paediatric Respiratory System and the Paediatric Musculoskeletal System courses will be running on the weekends of 2-3 March and 16-17 March 2019 respectively, here at the UCO.

Not all osteopaths who treat paediatrics have any formal postgraduate training in this patient population. Often for osteopaths this is financially not viable, or they don’t have the time to commit to the formal postgraduate programmes that are available either at UCO or elsewhere.

Children are not mini adults. There are many complaints that are paediatric specific, many of which are clearly defined to different age groups. For some conditions, it is essential that these are identified on a timely basis. Some conditions in the paediatric population can be life-threatening if not treated quickly. Treatment of children of various ages requires many different skills, both in the physical handling of the patient and in communication with either the patient or the accompanying parent or guardian. Both of the above CPD courses include sections on communication and consent which are very specific when considering the treatment of children.

The osteopathic practice standards require osteopaths to have and be able to apply sufficient and appropriate knowledge and skills to support their work as an osteopath. Our CPD courses are an ideal opportunity for qualified osteopaths with varying levels of paediatric clinical practice to undertake some specific, evidence-based training, delivered by highly qualified and experienced paediatric osteopaths to ensure their paediatric knowledge and skills are up to date.

The paediatric respiratory course is delivered by Lizzy Lomax. Lizzy graduated from the British School of Osteopathy (now UCO) in 2008 with a Bachelor of Osteopathy. After doing postgraduate training at the Osteopathic Centre for Children (OCC) for two years, she gained a Masters in Paediatric Osteopathy. Lizzy currently teaches on the PGCert in Specialist Paediatric Osteopathic Practice postgraduate course at UCO, leading the Respiratory Unit. She also works as an undergraduate Clinic Tutor at the in-house Babies and Children’s Clinic, and volunteers to deliver osteopathic treatments at 1st Place Children and Parents' Centre.

The paediatric musculoskeletal system course is taught by Arabella Gaunt. Arabella qualified as an osteopath from the BSO in 2011 with distinction, and completed her Paediatric Diploma at the OCC in 2013. Following this, she gained an MSc in Sports Medicine from Queen Mary University of London (QMUL). She currently teaches both undergraduate and postgraduate students at the UCO where she is a Clinical Teaching Fellow. Arabella works as an undergraduate Clinic Tutor at the UCO's Babies and Children’s Clinic, and also leads the Sports Clinic. In addition, she works in private practice where she treats both adults and children.
