We are pleased to announce that the Sven Svenson Bursary for 2017 has been awarded to fifth year part-time M.Ost student, James Burrells.
The award, which is intended to help ease the final year of study for a student of particular promise, was established by Dame Beryl Grey DBE CH in memory of her late husband, Sven Svenson.
Sven graduated from the UCO (then BSO) in the 1940s. He originally trained as a GP, but developed a lifelong passion for osteopathy, which contributed to his successful recovery from a diving accident. He treated patients including Elizabeth Taylor, Charlton Heston and Bob Hope until he was 94, and died at the age of 100 in 2008.
Once a year the top students from our undergraduate programmes are invited to submit a short written statement, and Dame Grey then interviews these students before selecting the recipient. The winner receives a bursary of £500.
James said: “It is such an honour to receive the Sven Svenson Bursary Award and a great opportunity to share what I hope to contribute to the profession in the future. I feel very lucky to be studying at UCO, which I consider to be at the forefront of osteopathic teaching and best practice and aim to continue to set as high a standard as possible in my future studies and practice. My thanks to Dame Beryl Grey and to all the staff at UCO for all their support."
