Beyond UCO – event recap
On 21 March 2019 we hosted ‘Beyond UCO’, our annual careers event aimed to showcase the range of career opportunities available to our students once they graduate.
We know that life after graduation can be daunting and we believe it's important that we support and inspire our students, show them the different directions they can take with their careers and showcase the success of our former students.
Open to current students and new graduates of the UCO, the event is an opportunity to find out more about the various career pathways open to students, and to network and exchange ideas with peers and guests.
The afternoon opened with Haidar Ramadan, Head of Practical Skills at the UCO and Team Leader for an NHS Trust, discussing opportunities in the NHS and how to apply for these positions. Next, we had Naval Mair who graduated from the UCO in 1991. Naval discussed his journey from graduation onwards to becoming a business owner and employer.
Following these talks, there was a short networking session where students could speak to guests one-on-one and browse our jobs board which advertised jobs in the UK and worldwide.
The next set of speakers discussed the different specialisms available within the osteopathic profession. Shireen Ismail, UCO’s Course Leader for the Postgraduate Certificate in Integrated Care of Older Adults, discussed working with elderly patients and why there is a growing need for expert practitioners in this field.
Rosy Hyman, Vice Chairman & Head of Mentorship Programme at the Osteopathic Sports Care Association (OSCA), then spoke with students about working within sport and how the OSCA can support osteopaths to work in this field. Samantha Fennel UCO’s Course Leader for the Postgraduate Certificate in Specialist Paediatric Osteopathic Practice followed and spoke about developing a practice in paediatrics.
The afternoon ended with talks by Fiona Hendry on teaching opportunities in osteopathy, David Hohenschurz-Schmidt on research opportunities, and Daniel Orchard on volunteering opportunities with Core Clapton – an innovative centre for holistic health and wellbeing based in east London.
Overall, with 75 students in attendance, it was a great event which students found very useful. They commented:
