Here at the UCO, we recognise that students have individual requirements and some may need different levels of support in progressing to higher education.
Which is why we work with different targeted groups across several different networks to raise aspirations and attainment. These targeted groups include but are not limited to young people from a care background, disabled students, young adult carers, estranged students, asylum seeking and refugee students, and students from ethnic minority backgrounds.

The UCO offers a number of workshops and taster days designed to help students on the path to higher education, some examples of which are listed below. Years 7 - 11
What is HE? Who is HE?
In this session, we aim to help students understand more about university in an interactive workshop.
Location: Delivered in school or at the UCO.
Options and Opportunities
With so many different GCSE options available, it is important that students make the right choices. This sessions aim to help students with their decision making process for their GCSE’s.
Location: Delivered in school or at the UCO.
Student Life at University
University offers so many different experiences for students and can be a big change from school/sixth form/college. This session demystifies student life and some of the stereotypes about going to university. The session will also cover what it’s like to live away from home, how to manage and cope with the new independent learning style and tips on how to make the most out of your time at university.
Location: This session can be run as workshops and/or assemblies.
Managing your Money at University
This interactive workshop will help students better understand how to budget their finances when at university, what funding and support they might be able to access. As well as few money-saving hints and tips from our Student Ambassadors.

Post 16
Journey through the UCAS Application Process
The UCAS application process can be a very long and confusing 12 months for students. In this interactive session students will be guided through the UCAS application process from researching universities and narrowing down their searches to finalising their options and starting their course.

Personal Statement Drop-Ins
A member of our Recruitment and Admissions team will be able to come in and read through students’ personal statements to help them perfect their statements before finalising their application.

Personal Statement Workshops
A practical workshop that provides tips on how to write a personal statement. Students who have already begun their personal statements will have the opportunity to have their personal statement read through by a member of the recruitment and admissions team.

It is easy for us to dive into a takeaway pizza or curry and tap away on our contactless payment cards and apps. This interactive session will help students better understand how to plan their finances and stick to a budget, as well as offer a few hints and tips that’ll save you money and allow you to enjoy a takeaway every now and again without breaking the bank.
Osteopathic Taster Days
What is osteopathy? What does an osteopath do? Is it recognised by the NHS?
Our osteopathic taster day is designed to provide students with the best possible insight into the world of osteopathy. Students will also have an opportunity to visit our UCO Clinic, which is the largest osteopathic clinic in Europe.
Location: Delivered at the UCO (but can also be delivered in school).
